@tubesock I would strongly prefer that I could upload my own custom category images (and with a full banner or rectangle size), not these little avatars. Categories should look different from games.
One of my huge concerns with this entire Arcade is the Flash apocalypse. It's less than a year away, and modern browsers already block it. With end of life for Flash, there will be no more security updates. This means any new security exploits will not be given updates creating a gap in any community's network security.
I use the Clear Notifications by @Pete T plugin as well. It's a greatp lugin.
It's highly recommended that you download resources from the IPS Marketplace instead of private share, since that ensures you get the latest version that's been audited by IPS.
We try an keep everything we have active, more to show what the arcade has to offer.
For the demo site here on IPSProArcade, I think that's a great strategy to show everything off 🙂
It would still be interesting, even among Arcade admins, to see how many of us actually changed the game settings to something other than the default. We would be power users of Arcade.
There actually is no limit in the arcade itself, it's a server limit. The # of input variables is set to 1,000 (on 99.9% installations out in the world) and each category has 6 or 7 input fields. The variable in php.ini could be edited to double or triple that and then you'd have 286'ish limit.
When the new category/sub-category editor is put into place, it will be a non-issue as there will not be that many input fields on the screen at one time.
The subcategories would help a lot. I know certain categories like Casinos or Words or Puzzles can cover a lot of possibilities.
Have you thought about allowing games to be 'tagged', so they can create virtual albums or virtual organization? For example, a game could be tagged as adventure, holidays, santa and it would potentially fit into any one of those collections.
Anyway, for better or worse my site probably has the most cats of anywhere (139, and I suspect the maximum allowed may be 143!?). Hovering over a cat name may show a longhand definition - in our view - of that cat.
You could use these as a base and simply delete the detail you don't want.
LOL .... I know! Every arcade website that I went to go survey had their own system of categories, and it seems like you can keep adding more and more categories 🙂
From a UIX standpoint, I do believe there's a maximum 'human limit' when enough is enough. I don't know what the magic number is, but I would personally probably cap it somewhere like 12 - 15. There's a well known psychological behavior of "overchoice," when humans cannot cognitively process a decision when faced with too many options.
Just curious, how many of you allow User Settings? (eg. to allow users to choose the game row layout). It;s this screen right here:
I've turned it off for a couple of reasons:
1. The biggest reason is that unless users are aware of the User Settings, I highly doubt anyone is going to go poking around in their Account Settings (which, by the way, is different from the Profile) to adjust their game settings.
2. Do a significant amount of users actively change their game settings? Do you have data behind it (eg. out of 2000 players who registered and played in your arcade, 1500 of them changed their game settings). I don't see that happening, and would rather keep it 'simple and stupid' for my users, especially in the beginning.
Keep in mind that my community's Arcade is brand new, so my users won't have the same kind of historical knowledge that maybe your users do (eg. if they're already aware of user settings, it's hard to "take away." But if they never had it, they don't know they want it.) Curious to hear what you all think.
Are you cloud hosted by IPS? They maintain backups that you can request at anytime
Are you self-hosted? You should always contact your server admin to see if they can create regular, recurring backups. This will save you in the future.
Thanks for your purchase Joel, please send your site information on where you want to install the arcade to tubesock (in a PM) so that he can add you into the allowed list and he in return will send you a PM with the arcade attached, once you have been added then you will be able to download from the VIP forums like everyone else
I'm confused. I was already able to download the tar from the VIP forums?
1. Can you attest that the code does not not contain any call backs, malicious code, or monitoring without full disclosure?
2. Can you attest that the app does not do anything besides the stated purpose of the app?
3. Who is the developer behind the app?
Please answer at your earliest convenience. While I support your prerogative to use ioncube to encode your intellectual property, it also prohibits others from running a security or performance audit.

Thank you @Oak for the category images.
